Cadence Theatre Company Announces 2021-22 Season

In-person Performances Return September 23 to Cadence's stage at the Theatre Gym, Sara Belle and Neil November Theatre!

The Season Features A World Premiere from CTC's Pipeline New Works Fellowship, mentored by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire.

Cadence Theatre Company Artistic and Managing Director Anna Senechal Johnson announces the company’s 2021-22 Season, marking its twelfth year of producing theatre in Richmond and the long-awaited return to in-person performances.

CTC is thrilled to welcome back audiences with an ambitious season packed with drama, humor, and powerful stories that unite. The season reflects Cadence’s commitment to inspire and transform our community by presenting contemporary theatrical works that uplift the spirit, challenge the mind, and honor both our individuality and our shared humanity. Through a commitment to artistic excellence, Cadence fearlessly tells the stories of our lives as we live them now.

“Our 2021-22 Season showcases who we are, a company that not only produces the best new work available but also one that develops new work that represents diverse voices and points of view,” says Johnson. “In May of last year, we witnessed the tragic death of George Floyd. It was a catalyst for us to reflect on our country, its institutions and our own community. Cadence recommitted to listen to, embrace, and celebrate BIPOC artists and artistic leaders and to provide a safe space for meaningful and life-changing conversations.”

Small Mouth Sounds by Bess Wohl
September 23—October 3, 2021

The 2020 hit play continues! Six strangers escaping city life embark on a silent retreat in the woods. Led by an unseen and enigmatic wellness guru, the attendees vary from ardent devotees to total skeptics. In the isolation of the woods, they are offered the chance to break away from their troubles and find themselves through mindfulness, yoga practice, and, above all, silence. Small Mouth Sounds asks how we address life’s biggest questions when words fail us.

Everybody by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins
January 13—30, 2022

Everybody’s time is up.  But Everybody doesn’t want to greet Death alone, so Everybody seeks the company of their friends Stuff, Kinship, Friendship, Cousinship, and Love to make the trip bearable. Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ (Appropriate, Gloria) modern riff on the fifteenth-century morality play Everyman follows Everybody (chosen from amongst the cast by lottery at each performance) as they journey through life’s greatest mystery — the meaning of living.  2018 Pulitzer Prize Finalist in Drama.

WORLD PREMIERE
Cross Stitch Bandits by Sanam Laila Hashemi and Steven Burneson
June 2—19, 2022

For the past 27 years, David has dutifully climbed the ranks at the same engineering firm and placed his family on a trajectory for success. His wife is a well-respected vice principal, his daughter is weeks away from graduating law school, and his son should be going back to school any day now. Today, his family has gathered to celebrate his retirement by permanently laying his career to rest. What starts as a kooky party leaves David scrambling to get everyone's lives back on track. Cross Stitch Bandits was conceived and developed through the Cadence Pipeline New Works Fellowship Program.

“Our community craves and needs live theatre. We are grateful to be back, more ready than ever to ignite the imagination, explore the human experience, and start important conversations through the power and magic of the stage,” says Cadence Board Member Joni Albrecht.
