The Christians
Cadence Theatre Company and Virginia Repertory Theatre present The Christians
Cadence Theatre Company and Virginia Repertory Theatre are pleased to present The Christians, by Lucas Hnath as part of the Richmond Acts of Faith Festival. The winner of the 2016 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play, The Christians tells the story of Pastor Paul, a man who has successfully guided his congregation through challenges large and small for twenty years. But when he starts to question one aspect of his faith — the existence of Hell — his doubt leads to a schism among his congregation and a deep engagement with what it means to be a member of a faith-based community.
A reviewer for Christianity Today wrote that what sets The Christians apart is Hnath’s “commitment to honesty” that “lets the characters live and breathe as real human beings.” The play doesn’t take sides — it challenges its audience, whatever its beliefs, to open their hearts and consider some of their deepest commitments. The Christians is a play that lends itself to serious, thoughtful conversation about truth, trust, and the meaning of faith.
The Christians is directed by Rusty Wilson (Cadence/VA REP--John, In the Next Room..., The Flick, Sight Unseen). Musical Direction is by John Winn (Cadence/VA REP--Caroline, or Change). The talented cast includes Bostin Christopher (The Pastor), Brandon Carter (The Associate), Bev Appleton (The Elder), Addie Barnhart (The Wife), and Sanam Hashemi (The Congregant). Band members under Winn’s leadership include Emily Berg-Poff Dandridge, Jessi Johnson, Ben Kelly, Forrest Link, and Scott Milstead. The Christian’s design team includes Rich Mason (Scenic Design), Andrew Bonniwell (Lighting Design), and Sarah Grady (Costume Design).
The Christians is made possible through the generosity and support of Cadence Theatre Company’s Season Sponsor, Salomon & Ludwin and The E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation, and KPMG.
