Kimberly Akimbo
Cadence Theatre Company in partnership with Barksdale’s Theatre Gym is pleased to present Kimberly Akimbo at Barksdale’s Theatre Gym October 13-November 2, 2011. This hilarious black comedy will feature Richard Koch (Buddy), Matthew Mitchell (Jeff), Jill Bari Steinberg (Debra), Debra Wagoner (Pattie) and Irene Ziegler (Kimberly), and is directed by Anna Johnson.
Set in the wilds of suburban New Jersey, Kimberly Akimbo is an uproarious and heartrending play about a teenager with a rare condition that causes her body to age faster than it should. When she and her family flee Secaucus under dubious circumstances, Kimberly is forced to reevaluate her life while contending with a hypochondriac mother, a rarely sober father, a scam- artist aunt, her own mortality and, most terrifying of all, the possibility of first love.
By 2007 Pulitzer Prize winner and Tony nominee David Lindsay-Abaire, Kimberly Akimbo was commissioned by South Coast Repertory Theatre, and received the LA Drama Critics Award for playwriting, three Garland Awards and the Kesselring Prize. The play went to a sold-out run at Manhattan Theatre Club.
“A zany, disturbing and strangely affecting comedy. It’s a bit of youthful happiness unlike any other.” –The Associated Press
